In 2019, a few months before the pandemic reached us in the US, @christastcyr and I traveled deep into Chilean Patagonia 🇨🇱 to complete the W Trek (so called for the shape of the route). . On our last day of hiking 🎒, we woke up at 3am to hike up to the Towers for sunrise, but the weather has other plans. It was down pouring 🌧 and we made the (relatively easy) decision to go back to sleep. When we got up in the morning, the weather hadn’t cleared. Others who braved the weather reported zero visibility; low clouds blocked out all views of the Towers. The day went on and the rain slowed, but showed no sign of stopping. We decided to start the hike 🏔 in the early afternoon despite the high chances of cloud cover. Along the hike, the rain stopped and the temps increased from near freezing to beach weather, but still the clouds stayed. Finally, as we pushed toward the top, the clouds broke and the sun came out. Among the last people of the day to make to the top, we enjoyed beautiful weather and spectacular views in unpredictable Patagonia. In this photo, the CONAF ranger tells the only other people still at the top with us that it’s time to head down to ensure we all make it back before dark. . This pretty incredible ⛰cliff side view of Lake Superior is just a short walk from Split Rock Lighthouse . My family drove out and back along MN Route 61, one of America’s scenic highways 🛣, to see some of these dramatic vistas. . Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area and contains more than 10% of the world’s freshwater at 2,900 cubic miles. That’s roughly 3,193,200,000,000,000 gallons!💧 .
